What comment-to-DM automation is
Comment-to-DM is the simplest Instagram automation with the biggest payoff. You end your caption with “Comment GUIDE and I’ll DM you the link”, and everyone who comments the word gets a direct message within seconds.
It replaces copy-pasting the same link under hundreds of comments, it puts your offer in the inbox where people actually click, and it starts a conversation you can follow up on.
Before you start
- An Instagram professional account (Business or Creator). Personal accounts can’t use Instagram’s messaging API.
- A FandomFlow account — the Free plan includes 3 live automations.
- The thing you’ll send: a link, a file, a product or a booking page.
Set it up in FandomFlow
- 1
Connect Instagram. In Integrations, connect your account with Instagram Login and approve the messaging and comment permissions.
- 2
Create an automation and choose the Comment on post or reel trigger.
- 3
Pick the post. Target one specific reel or post, or every post on the account.
- 4
Add keywords. Enter one or more words such as GUIDE, LINK or PRICE. Choose whether a comment must match any keyword or all of them — or reply to every comment.
- 5
Write the DM. Add a short message and a button with your link. You can also send a product carousel from your store or a lead form.
- 6
Optional: reply publicly. Add a public comment reply such as “Sent! Check your DMs” so others know it works.
- 7
Set a run rule. Run once per contact so people who comment twice don’t get the same DM again.
- 8
Test and switch on. Use the test run, check the execution history, then turn the automation on.
What happens behind the scenes
When someone comments, Instagram notifies FandomFlow. If the comment matches, FandomFlow sends a private reply: a DM linked to that comment. Instagram allows one private reply per comment. When the person answers that DM, the conversation is open and your flow can continue with follow-ups, quick replies or a lead form.
Read Instagram DM automation rules for the details on private replies and the 24-hour window.
Five comment-to-DM ideas
- Freebie delivery: “Comment GUIDE” → DM with the PDF link and a lead form for their email.
- Price answers: “Comment PRICE” on a product reel → product carousel with a Buy button.
- Bookings: “Comment CALL” → available session types and a booking link.
- Waitlists: “Comment DROP” → collect interest before a launch, then message the list on launch day.
- Ads: the same flow on your ad comments.
Mistakes to avoid
- Vague keywords. “YES” matches too much. Use a distinctive word.
- Walls of text. One sentence and one button convert better than a paragraph.
- No follow-up. Add a wait and a gentle second message for people who didn’t click.
- Two tools on one post. If you’re moving from another tool, switch its automation off first, or people get two DMs.
